“Chronically elevated cortisol increases the likelihood of severe menopausal symptoms” Cagnacci et al 2011
Oestrogen and progesterone have a dampening effect on cortisol.
As oestrogen and progesterone levels drop during menopause, the protection from cortisol also drops.
In times of stress, the building blocks in the body that usually make hormones, start to make cortisol. This leaves none left to produce oestrogen and progesterone.
Cortisol can rob us of oestrogen and progesterone.
The menopause can hit when stress levels are already high;
You many have teenage children or children leaving home, ageing parents, work/money worries, or concerns about your own ageing.
Reducing stress in our lives can have the most profound impact on our general health.
Make time for relaxation - you deserve it!
Reflexology aims to optimise physical and emotional well-being.
Lowering stress levels can reduce menopause symptoms and lead to feeling calmer, more relaxed, improved sleep, improved sense of mood and wellbeing.
Pleasant physical touch creates oxytocin, this reduces stress and anxiety, reduces the pulse and blood pressure rate, increases pain threshold, is sleep inducing, contributes to positive mood and trust.
Menopause is a new phase in our lives, which we will pass through.
It is an opportunity to tune in to our bodies and give ourselves the best as we deserve.
Menopause means the cessation of menstruation. It occurs as we move from perimenopause to menopause after we have had no periods for 12 months.
During perimenopause and menopause, the levels of oestrogen and progesterone begin to reduce.
This can have a profound effect on different systems of our body, and on ourselves as a whole.
For each women it is very different, in some cases symptoms can be severe and in others not at all.
The most common symptoms felt by women during the menopause and perimenopause are hots flushes, night sweats and anxiety.
However, the body is still effected by these lower levels of hormones, which can lead to long term effects on the body, such as osteoporosis and cardiac events.
Oestrogen is known for its role in our monthly menstrual cycle but it also has a role to play in brain function, memory, bone health, circulation, digestion, liver function, kidney function, immune system, nerves, muscles, cardiovascular system plus many other functions of the body.
Oestrogen receptors are proteins found in cells across the body; they rely on oestrogen to function.
The receptors receive messages via the blood stream to cause a particular activity in the body.
During the menopause as the level of oestrogen reduces, these receptors become less active as they do not receive the message needed to create a particular activity.
This can lead to a range of symptoms during menopause.
Oestrogen receptors are found in the breast tissue, bones, skin, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, cardiovascular system, thyroid and digestive tract.
As oestrogen levels fall, this is a risk factor that increases the chance of developing certain long-term long-term conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol diabetes stroke some cancers respiratory disease osteoporosis and inflammatory conditions.
Making lifestyle changes is key to protecting our health for the rest of our lives, ensuring the best of health and quality of life.
Reflexology can help ease symptoms, and bring the body into balance.
Reflexology can also be used alongside HRT.
A matter of perspective
It is interesting to know the different views of menopause between the East and West.
In the West it can be considered as a time of loss - loss of fertility, children may have left home, parents may have died, loss of feelings of femininity.
While in the East it is seen as a time of wisdom and maturity, a right of passage.
Women are regarded with respect.
